Full Backup, Differential Backup and
Incremental Backup
What is the difference between a full
image, a differential image and an
incremental image?
The ShadowProtect line of Real-Time
Recovery solutions offer you three ways
to backup your systems and data: full
images, differential images and
incremental images. How you choose to
manage your backup images will depend on
your needs and your resources.
Full backup:
ShadowProtect takes a complete
point-in-time backup image of all your
systems and data.
Differential backups:
ShadowProtect takes a point-in-time
backup of only the system and data
changes made since your last full
backup.
Incremental backups:
ShadowProtect takes a point-in-time
backup of only the system and data
changes made since your last incremental
(or full) backup.
Full backups can be used independently
and do not require any additional files
to completely recover your systems and
data. However, full backups require more
disk space and more time to complete.
Differential backups have only the data
and system files that have changed since
the last full backup. Differential files
are smaller, however they can only be
used in conjunction with full backup
files. They require less disk space and
less time to complete.
Incremental backups include only the
data and system files that have changed
since the last incremental backup – or
full backup, if it is the first
incremental backup. Incremental backups
are very fast and require very little
disk space. However, they must be made
in conjunction with a full backup and
data recovery requires you to recover
all incremental files in an image set.
An image set is all of the image files
needed to complete recovery of systems
and data.
