Server Backup
Online Server Backup
Online Server Backup is sometimes called
hot imaging or online imaging. An online
server backup is software or a service
which creates a complete backup
of your server while it is still
operational – while it is still being
used in your enterprise. Traditional
backup requires you to take a server
offline to perform a backup. However,
new methods are allowing you to keep the
server running while that backup is
taking place.
One method is to use volume snapshot
technology, like that in StorageCraft
ShadowProtect, to create a
point-in-time backup of your server
volumes without ever taking your server
offline. These backup images are
compressed and encrypted and can be
saved to various disk devices to be used
in the event of a catastrophic failure,
such as a server crash or other
disaster.
Another method is to purchase a service
which performs a backup of your server
to an off-site location using
outside-party hardware. The charge for
these services depends on your contract
– it can be based on time (monthly,
quarterly, yearly), the amount of data
you’re backing up, or both.

Katmai, the code name for Microsoft's imminent SQL Server 2008 release, comes from an Alaskan territory know for volcanoes, which may not be the best symbol for a database. So far, however, Katmai hasn't blown up on me. And the lower-profile Katmai seems like a good follow-on to Yukon, the code name for the gigantic SQL Server 2005 release.
