Creating a Recovery CD
If you’ve recently purchased StorageCraft ShadowProtect for the first time, you may not know how to create a recovery CD. You’ll need a CD with the StorageCraft Recovery Environment in case you ever need to restore a system — whether it’s a server or a desktop/laptop. If you downloaded the software from the StorageCraft Web site, you received some instructions on how to do this, but you may not have understood why you need to do this now. Basically it boils down to this: if you wait until you need the recovery disk (say, following a catastrophic failure), it will be a little more difficult to create the CD. It’s always so much easier to have it handy before the disaster.
So here’s what to do. After downloading ShadowProtect, load a blank CD into your CD/DVD drive. Now navigate to the folder where you saved your ShadowProtect 4 download, unzip the file and you’ll see a .ISO image file. Open your CD burning software and then browse to the .ISO file and burn this to your CD. Once it’s burned, make sure you label it ShadowProtect Recovery CD and put it in a safe place.
Most CD burning software are able to create a CD from an .ISO file, but there are some free tools available to do this, too: ISOTool.exe is a tool included with ShadowProtect and Active @ISO Burner is a free tool you can download at: http://www.ntfs.com/iso_burner_free.htm.
I tried to follow these instructions. I’ve downloaded the ENU_SBS_Setup_4.0.1.exe file, and I unzipped it using 7zip, and there is not an ISO file in the directory I unzipped it to. Am I missing something?
Did you download a full copy of ShadowProtect, including the recovery environment? If so, it should contain an ISO file. If not, then please contact StorageCraft customer service: sales@storagecraft.com. If you downloaded the trial version, it will not contain the recovery environment, as we have to license WinPE from Microsoft for the recovery environment, which is a fixed cost for us.
At the risk of sounding frustrated. Why so difficult? I have ENU_SBS_Setup_4.0.1.exe and all it wants to do is reinstall the application I cannot seem to extract any ISO from it?
So to test this product if we want to move from Acronis, I actually have to pay for it? As of right now, your product is basically not working then either if I cannot test the recovery.
Claytonids: No, you don’t have to pay for it to test the recovery environment. We have free trials available on our website, but they don’t include the recovery environment because Windows charges us a royalty fee for that. If you’d like to contact us at sales@storagecraft.com, we can get you set up with the full version to test out the recovery. Hope this helps – let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks for the instructions. Do I also need to burn the .iso.md5 file onto the recovery CD?
Hi S N,
It sounds like you haven’t downloaded the recovery environment yet. Download the ISO from the following link: http://www.storagecraft.com/release/sprelease.asp.
After you’ve finished the download, feel free to call our customer support (801-545-4700), and one of our representatives will work with you through the rest of the process.
I hope this helps.
