For businesses, failing to plan for a disaster is essentially planning to fail, according to Times of Malta. With so many different options for disaster recovery, there is no good reason to not have a business continuity strategy in place.

“The ‘it won’t happen to me’ approach just doesn’t cut it these days,” Bob Clarke, a business continuity specialist, told the news source. “This is not just an IT issue but a business one. There needs to be a holistic management approach that provides a framework for building organizational resilience.”

Disaster can occur in many different ways, from something as common as a hard drive failure to an event more severe like an oil spill. As such, businesses need to be prepared, but finding the best solution requires further answers. For a company considering its data backup software needs, there are three primary solutions which are of the highest quality and reliability.

Cloud
With an online backup solution, businesses gain certain advantages that other systems do not offer. Flexible access and secure off-site storage provide the main benefits, but there is also low cost and a lack of necessary technical skill to implement these solutions, which make them useful for many businesses. However, not all businesses are ready to jump onto the cloud bandwagon, and, as such, a different approach may be needed.

Disk
With hard drive backup strategies, a business gains the advantage of having its backups on hand and easily accessible, making disaster recovery swift and efficient. This allows a business to schedule backup and recovery processes for whenever it wishes, and also allows recovery of systems even if there is no internet access, unlike the cloud. However, running with disk on-site also puts data backups at risk if a natural disaster damages the main office. Should an office flood, for example, these hard drives could be damaged just as easily as primary systems.

Hybrid
For many businesses, a hybrid cloud and hard drive approach may be the most efficient solution. With the reliability of the cloud and speed of disk both at the company’s disposal, no business should suffer prolonged downtime from a disaster. Having a secondary backup solution is often recommended, as this covers numerous parts of disaster recovery and helps a business be truly prepared for any eventuality.
