These days a company almost needs a website to successfully market itself. In the technology industry, building a website can also be a great opportunity to show off a little bit of your technical prowess. But how useful is your website? How many people are viewing your site and how do you measure and visualize this data?

Let Google Analytics do it for you. It’s a useful tool for measuring the success of all your online marketing endeavors. It can gather all the data you need to determine what in your website is working, and what isn’t.

With the help of a recent Tech Republic article, let’s explore some things you might want to know about Google Analytics.

Luckily, setting up Google Analytics is very easy and doesn’t require you to use Google’s hosting service or update your DNS record. All you have to do is sign up for the service and enter a string on the webpage or pages you want to analyze.  Once that’s done, Google starts gathering data. Once you’ve got Google Analytics set up, it allows you to investigate:

–          How many visitors your site has at the moment

–          Who visited and how many are unique or repeat visitors

–          How visitors got to your site

–          Where visitors come from geographically

–          Which pages are most visited

–          How many visitors leave without looking at other pages (this is called the bounce rate)

–          Average time spent on your site

–          Much more

Google offers both free and a paid versions. Google Analytics Premium offers direct support, account management, hands-on implementation assistance, greater data processing capacities, and more. The free version gives you samples of data—more of a statistical average and isn’t quite as accurate as the data available from the premium version.

Google Analytics is also customizable, giving you a dashboard you can customize to display data that’s most useful to you. There’s no need to spend time digging through the data to find what you’re after, it’s simply on your dashboard, ready for review.

Google Analytics is useful to both new users and experts. You can set up goal conversions and measure business objectives, access e-commerce data involving product and sales performance, and use advanced segmentation to determine what kind of traffic you’re getting to your site. Plus, web admins can examine site speed, page load time, and other factors to help determine how well the site handles higher volumes of traffic.

There are loads of things you can do using Google Analytics and there’s no reason you shouldn’t know everything there is to know about the performance of your website; Google Analytics is a great tool if you’re not sure how well your website is doing and also gives you tools you can use to determine the best ways to draw more traffic and a build an effective site.
