How do I transfer everything (hard drive image) to a completely new *laptop* computer?

Hi all,

I'm new to posting threads and usually resort to just reading them, but I have yet to see an answer to my question and have been working on this for several days....

HOW I GOT HERE:

3.4 network password not correct. KB article is wrong?

Hello - This KB article seems to address my issue, but it says I should use version 3.5, which doesn't look like its out yet?

NIC not recognized in Recovery Enviroment??

Hi,

I'm trying to boot from the Desktop version 3.2 Recovery CD. I need network support, since my new notebook computer doesn't have a firewire port, and my external drive is firewire. So I would like to back up over a LAN to my external drive, plugged in and shared through another computer.

Windows Vista - Prep Steps Prior to Imaging for a Successful Restore

For now, there is enough information out on the Internet that finally points to the culprit in restoring Windows Vista via any image based backup solution.

Four preparatory commands need to be run prior to imaging the OS. Either batch or run these commands individually:

  • bcdedit /set {default} device boot
    bcdedit /set {default} osdevice boot
    bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device boot
    bcdedit /set {memdiag} device boot

The background can be found here with the BCD settings before and after the commands have been run:

Re: HIR Restore Vista X64 to VMWARE Workstation 6.5

If I was doing this from scratch, I'd probably just use the vmware converter. Just start up vmware, File, Import, Third-party backup etc. and select the SP backup image. It takes a while, but it is pretty effective.

Anyway, back to your virtual machine......

BCD store looks fine. Make sure that the Vista partition is marked Active. That's an easy one to forget. Boot into SP CD, Disk Map, select Vista volume and mark Active. You can also check/set this using the Partition Editor under Tools.

Service cannot be started - New install - Vista Business 32

I am switching clients from Acronis True Image for reasons well covered in these forums. I'm having trouble with an install. I spent some time here looking for a solution by no luck so far.

Running Vista Business 32-bit on Dell laptop. McAfee security software is installed (not my recommendation).

Uninstalled True Image. Went through a long checklist removing Registry entries, deleting snapman.sys, etc.

Won't run on VMWare

I am evaluating your desktop edition.  I am losing my laptop shortly due to the end of a lease, and I really want to be able to run your backup under VMWare.  I did exactly like the video, but when the VM starts, nothing happens, the screen is just blank.  My laptop is a Dell, and it does look like the C drive, which is what I backed up, is actually partition #3.  From what I have seen in these forums, I guess that might be a problem.  I also wonder if the fact that the laptop runs Vista Ultimate has anything to do with it.  While I work as a software developer

Inconsistent ImageManager and SPD behavior--poor error handling?

I've been testing IM and SPD and have had some odd behavior. To help resolve the issue, I deleted the existing backup tasks and destinations and started over. I'll limit the discussion here to that environment, (which, of course, has behavior that is different from what I saw at first). I think there are a few issues that the software may need to address.
